Nkunu Akyea

Facilitator - Cultural Heritage

My name is Nkunu Akyea. I have over 30 years experience in social and community development. I was the head of the department of Geography and Tourism at the University of Cape Coast where I taught for more than 30 years.  After retiring from the university, I became the executive director of the Ghana Heritage Conservation Trust (GHCT), an organization that took over the responsibility of managing projects of the Natural Resource Conservation and Historic Preservation Project. This project led the creation of Kakum National Park, the restoration and adaptive re-use of Elmina Castle and Cape Coast Castle. I have taken active part of projects including the UNESCO Slave Route Project, the Elmina Restoration Project, and executive member of the Pan-African Historical Theater Festival (PANAFEST), the founding member of the Tour Guides Association of Ghana (TORGAG), chairman of Central Region Tourism Development Committee, a facilitator for study-abroad program of students from James Madison University in Virginia for many years, and have led numerous tourism and community development capacity-building training programs.
